Ice Breaks Massive Tree In McKinney
MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - A couple in McKinney woke up to a crashing sound on Friday morning, as the winter storm covered North Texas in a layer of ice. A huge tree in front of their home was broken underneath the weight of the ice, knocking part of it down to the ground, and into their house along the way.
This happened in a neighborhood along North Coleman Street, where trees and bushes everywhere were visibly stressed from the thick ice. Branches were bent and leaves had become small ice cubes.
The large tree is estimated to be about 130 years old. It was shortly after 3:00 a.m. Friday morning when the couple heard the startling noise. "We had heard the branches falling all night long and didn't really think much of it," said homeowner Christina Goodman. "We looked out the window a few times to see what had fallen. Then we heard a big crash and glass breaking and we thought it was actually the windshield of the car breaking. So, we came down to investigate further and found it was actually a giant hole in our house."
The tree pierced a bedroom on the top floor and the kitchen on the bottom floor. City officials and emergency crews already stopped by the home to help clean up some of the mess, and an insurance agent is set to come by later on Friday to assess the damages.
Goodman is in good spirits, and said that she is thankful that the tree did not land on her. "We literally sleep right there," she said. "If it had been a few feet over, we would maybe all be at the emergency room right now."
Goodman is an educator in Prosper, and has no need to leave her house throughout the weekend. Friends have reached out to offer her a place to stay, however, since her home now has a hole in the side.
