I-Team Reveals Husband's Secret Life
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) – She fell in love, got married, and then thanks to a nearly six year old CBS 11 I-Team story, she confirmed her husband wasn't exactly who he claimed to be.
Sheri Brown, a realtor from British Columbia, Canada reached out to the CBS 11 I-Team after reading a story from 2007 about a man who looked a lot like her husband. The story was about Andrew Szadolc, who once claimed to be a doctor, a youth pastor and even a racecar driver.
Brown's husband, Timothy Szabolci, told her he was a retired psychiatrist and a former Canadian Air Force pilot, when they met in 2012. The couple had a whirl-wind romance, walking down the aisle in September, just 4 months after their first date.
"He was a complete gentleman. Always opened my car door for me. Made me dinner every night. Was just loving and caring. Very kind," Brown recalled.
But not long after getting married, the bills started to roll in for Dr. Szabolci. His accounts were frozen, so Brown took care of the bills.
"Well, I've been supporting him for the last six months," said Brown. "I'm out about $50,000. I've had to cash in my RSP's. I had a motorcycle. I sold that. And I said, 'This isn't right. Something's wrong here.'"
That's when she started to do some research and found the I-Team story about a man named Andrew Szadolc. While watching the story, Sherry realized it was her husband.
CBS 11 first caught wind of Andrew Szadolc, who now goes by Timothy Szabolci back in 2007 when he was running a pain management clinic in Garland. Back then, the I-Team uncovered Szadolc was never a licensed doctor and the parent company which owned the clinic pressed charges against him for stealing nearly 30-thousand dollars.
Szadolc eventually went to jail and in October 2009, he was sentenced to five years in prison. Less than a year later, he was paroled and deported to Canada. He started a new life as Dr. Timothy Szabolci and a new company called Platinum Pacific. It's a sales company that offers to help companies with their trucking needs and financial services.
"I don't know who this person is. I don't know him. I don't know where he's been, what he's done. It's all a lie," said Brown.
CBS 11 worked with a Canadian news station to track down Timothy Szabolci. He had no comment when asked if he served time in Texas for impersonating a doctor or if he was allowed in the United States.
Since watching the original I-Team story, Brown has contacted the Royal Canadian police about her husband and filed for divorce. The company Szabolci was running has since been shut down.
As a part of his parole, Szadolc was supposed to pay back the $30,000 he stole. However, the company that initially filed charges against him says they haven't received a dime.
Szadolc's parole is up July 23rd of this year, which means he can come back to the U.S. without any worries.
