Husband Sentenced To 7 Years For Fatally Shooting Wife

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - A judge has sentenced a 51-year-old man to seven years in prison for the fatal shooting of his wife.

Ricky Lynn Brown claimed the shooting was an accident and plead guilty to manslaughter for the September 2013 shooting.

Brown and his wife Susan, 59, were separated at the time and had gone to an Arlington motel room to talk.  Police were called to the Studio 6 Hotel, 1980 Pleasant Rd., and found Brown outside of the hotel room.  He claimed he had accidnetally shot his wife in the head.

Susan Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.  Police found a .45 caliber handgun on the nightstand in the hotel room.

Brown elected to have a judge decide his punishment, which ranged from probation to 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors portrayed Brown as a heavy drinker, who was verbally and physically abusive to his wife of more than 20 years.

Brown, who had no prior criminal history, must serve half of his 7-year sentence before he will be eligible for parole.
