Husband Murdered In Parking Lot Had Been Shot Before

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Dallas are focused on a daylight murder and the search for at least two gunmen.

Earnest Griffith Jr. would have been 41-years-old today. Instead he was shot and killed and his wife shot and injured while sitting outside a convenience store yesterday.

The shooting happened on Marfa Avenue in east Oak Cliff. Police say there may be surveillance video from the crime scene, to help with the investigation.

Amazingly, this wasn't the first time Griffith Jr. had been the victim of crime. The husband and father had been robbed and shot, in the same neighborhood, just months before.

Plans were for Earnest Griffith Sr. to spend Friday celebrating the day of his son's birth. Now the elder is making plans to lay his son to rest, while hoping the killers are caught.

It was before sunset Thursday when Earnest Griffith Jr. and wife Sheronda faced at least two gunmen at the Sunnyvale Station convenience store. Sheronda Griffith was the only one to survive. Her father-in-law remembers getting the news. "I had just bought groceries and the phone rang.  My wife picked it up and said, 'he's been shot again.'"

When Griffith Jr. survived being shot and robbed five months ago, his family counted their blessings. This time, police search for murderers, and a family tries to comprehend why anyone would do this. "We want the people who did this brought to justice," said Griffith Jr.'s aunt, Lucy Stewart. "Not that it will bring him back, but because of what they did to our family was senseless."

Sheronda Griffith was shot in the abdomen, and continues to recover at a North Texas hospital.
