Hurst PD "Putting The Cuffs On Cancer"
HURST (CBSDFW.COM) - For more than 20 years, Hurst police officer Cheryl Kovach has served others, at times even fought for others... now she is in the fight of her life. In 2008 Kovach battled breast cancer and won.
But now the cancer is back and her diagnosis is serious -- stage 4 breast cancer. But the veteran police officer isn't alone in her battle.
The Hurst Police Officers Association organized a benefit in her honor Saturday called "Putting The Cuffs On Cancer."
"It feels awesome and I feel very blessed that they put this event on for me and the whole awareness of breast cancer," said Kovach of the people who laced up to show their support.
Kovach's sister was also touched by the show of support from neighbors and strangers in their community.
"I know how much I love my sister but to see all these people out here that love my sister as much as I do its amazing," said Kovach's sister, Allison Barton.
From family to friends, strangers and fellow brothers and sisters in blue 'Putting The Cuffs On Cancer,' for Kovach, the show of support was an inspiration to all who participated.
"It's great -- it's real uplifiting. We're out there serving the community but then when one of ours goes down or needs help the community comes and backs us," said Hurst officer Will Calloway.
All the proceeds from the 5K will go to Kovach to help her with medical bills.
