Hundreds March To 'Take Back The Night' At TWU
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) – Hundreds of students marched through the Texas Women's University campus Monday to support victims of sexual assault.
"We want them to know we're here for them," said Ambreia Thomas, who participated in the march.
One at a time, before a crowd of classmates, survivors of rape shared their stories.
"This is the first year, I've come out about it...completely," said one victim, who didn't give her name.
The annual event, Take Back The Night, encourages women to come forward. It was at an event like this one when Kaci Whitby broke her silence.
"That was the first time I ever admitted I was raped by a football player at school," she said.
Now an organizer of the event, she believes it can help empower women.
"It was so liberating, it freed me to say it... And from that moment on, I've just not stopped. They just can't shut me up," she said.
The first Take Back The Night event was in Philadelphia in October of 1975. In 2001, the grassroots event turned into a publicly funded charity with the goal of ending sexual assaults throughout the world, according to its website.
