RED OAK (CBSDFW.COM) —The American flag draped over the casket might have been a hint that the funeral was not for an ordinary man. Roy Ramsey was a decorated World War II Army soldier.
Army Chaplain Scott Dennis eulogized his uncle, telling people of his military record. It included a good conduct medal, bronze arrowhead, two bronze stars and a purple heart.
"I think if Uncle Roy were here today, he would just kind of wave that off and say, 'Those are just trinkets,'" Scott said.
The 90-year-old man's funeral was inside the Eastridge Baptist Church.
His war accomplishments weren't known to many who knew him — until now. Ramsay was described as a humble man.
"He didn't often sit around and tell war stories," Dennis said. "That's probably true of many of his generation."
But for his family, they're stories that add to his legacy.
"There's things that we continue to find out about his experiences in World War II that we didn't know," Dennis said, "even today."
He was a war hero on the battle fields, but at home he was just "Roy-boy" to those who loved him most.
"This really is a celebration of life because he lived a full one," Dennis said.
And in the process, a man from The Greatest Generation offered a lesson in humility.
Ramsey is survived by his wife of 68 years and many nieces and nephews.
