Houston-Area Closing Brings TI Jobs To North Texas
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Hundreds of jobs are moving from the Houston area to North Texas.
Dallas-based Texas Instruments is closing a factory in Stafford and moving the operations to TI facilities in Dallas and Sherman.
Company CFO Kevin March said the 500 people employed at the Stafford factory will be given the chance to re-locate.
"They will have an opportunity to bid on openings here in the Dallas area, or the Sherman area," he said. "That's our standard practice is that we make that available."
The 45-year-old semiconductor-manufacturing site in Stafford makes 6-inch wafers used in products such as high-definition televisions and cell phones.
March expects there to be new job opportunities for North Texans, since not everyone from the Houston area will move.
"So for those, if the openings matched their skill sets and so on, there will be an opportunity for them [to move to a North Texas location] and for those that either choose not to or don't have a good match we have a pretty generous severance package," March said.
The transition will take place over the next 18 months.
