Holidays Arrive At The Dallas Arboretum
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The season is in full display at the Dallas Arboretum many times over. The world famous garden puts on only one interior exhibit a year. This season, it's a Nativity theme with over 400 scenes displayed throughout the lavishly decorated DeGolyer House.
The bulk of the exhibit comes from two collectors. The library contains 250 scenes from the collection of New York Broadway actor George Dvorsky. He started collecting scenes in his 30s, and to say it became an obsession is an understatement. The collection spans countries from all over world, made from every type of material and artist medium. "It's the second time it's been seen here," said Cris Emrich with the Dallas Arboretum. "Sets them up all by himself with a lot of help from volunteers. He likes to do it himself, so they look exactly like he wants them to look."
But his was not the first. The Harrington family of Dallas willed their massive collection years ago. This started the tradition at the DeGolyer House of displaying Nativity scenes. It's not every year; they rotate angels, Santas, nutcrackers and even fairy tale themes for the holiday.
This is the year of Nativity, however. It arrives every three years and requires a small army of volunteers to put it in place.
The Dallas Arboretum is open through the month of December. The Chihuly display continues as well until December 31. You can visit during the day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The evening tours go from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for the house and until 9:00 p.m. for the grounds. Visitors can stop for hot chocolate and cider as they stroll the outside display. There are only eight nights still available. They sell out evenings quickly because of the Chihuly exhibit and limited parking. Walking the Chihuly display at night is a real treat. It is also in its last month of its eight month visit here at the Dallas Arboretum.
