Holiday Mail For Heroes Campaign Begins

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The holidays are just a few short months away and if you want to make it about more than presents, the Red Cross is starting up its Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign.

Anita Foster with the American Red Cross of North Texas says you can do it on your own or in a group. "You want to get your friends, your associates together and just write a card of thanks to a member of the U.S. military that is currently serving or is a retired soldier or someone who is wounded in the hospital."

Foster says this would also be a great idea for teachers, Scout leaders and church groups to do with their kids.

All cards will be screened by a mailing center first for safety. This is the 6th year for this holiday campaign and they distribute about 1 million letters to soldiers each year.

Foster says this is a great way to just say thank you to soldiers who are not able to be with their families for the holidays.

But there are some restrictions, including:

*Ensure that all cards are signed.

*Use generic salutations such as "Dear Service Member." Cards addressed to specific individuals can not be delivered through this program.

*Only cards are being accepted. Do not send or include letters.

*Do not include email or home addresses on the cards: the program is not meant to foster pen pal relationships.

*Do not include inserts of any kind, including photos: these items will be removed during the reviewing process.

*Please refrain from choosing cards with glitter or using loose glitter as it can aggravate health issues of ill and injured warriors.

*If you are mailing a large quantity of cards, please bundle them and place them in large mailing envelopes or flat rate postal shipping boxes. Each card does not need its own envelope, as envelopes will be removed from all cards before distribution.

Mail your card to:
