Hispanic Leaders Urge Farmers Branch Boycott
FARMERS BRANCH (CBSDFW.COM) - A DFW group is hoping that a boycott will hit one North Texas city where it counts. The City of Farmers Branch wants to ban undocumented immigrants from renting property, but Hispanic community leaders are vowing to fight back.
This battle stems from a 2006 ordinance that stops someone from renting property in Farmers Branch if they do not have legal documents to prove that they can live in the United States. Just last month, a U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that the ordinance was unconstitutional, after a lower court had already made the same decision.
Now, the city voted 3-2 in favor of moving forward with the legal battle and taking this issue to the Supreme Court.
The ordinance has made a lot of people unhappy, including a group that includes Hispanic city leaders. That group is urging a boycott of the City of Farmers Branch. They are calling for residents to not shop there, miss work there, and not attend school there on Friday, September 13. The group hopes that the day-long boycott will help send a message to city officials.
Members of the group are set to meet with Mayor Bill Glancy on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the controversial issue.
