Highland Park Police Shoot & Kill Gunman Near SMU Campus
HIGHLAND PARK (CBSDFW.COM) - Highland Park police officers shot and killed a gunman, who was arrested near the SMU campus.
At about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, police say they received a 911 call from a driver who told dispatchers a man on a motorcycle was following behind them.
Police later located a motorcycle matching the description parked at a shopping center on Mockingbird Lane near Airline Road.
Police say the suspect took off as they tried to question him and led them on a short chase. After officers caught the suspect and put him in a patrol car, police say he was able to get out of his handcuffs and fire a gun he had in his possession.
Both officers shot back, firing three rounds, killing the suspect. The officers were not injured.
Police have not yet released the name of the suspect, but say he was riding a stolen motorcycle and had an active warrant out for his arrest, with a history of running from police.
Both officers involved are on administrative leave and the Dallas Sheriff's Office will conduct a full investigation.
