Police Chase Ends With Crash & House Fire

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - A high-speed police chase through Grand Prairie ended early Tuesday at a home in Irving, when the suspect's SUV crashed and caught on fire, setting the nearby home on fire as well.
According to Det. Lyle Gensler with the Grand Prairie Police Department, the incident began around 12:30 a.m. in the 900 block of Belt Line Road, where an officer attempted to perform a traffic stop on a driver who was not wearing his seat belt. The male driver fled, rushing through the city at speeds of more than 100 mph.
The chase went into Irving, where the suspect turned off of Rock Island Road and onto Witham Street. He struck a pickup truck and lost control of his SUV, Gensler explained. The vehicle smashed into a house and the suspect jumped out and fled from the scene.
Police officers gave chase, but could not find the man.
In the meantime, the crash caused the grass under the SUV to catch on fire. Those flames set the vehicle on fire, and the nearby house. Firefighters from Irving arrived to put out the flames. The home was vacant, and there were no injuries, Gensler said.
Irving police officers assisted in the search for the suspect, and even brought a K-9 patrol to help, but the man could not be found.
Police in Grand Prairie are investigating whether or not the SUV had been stolen. It had an invalid paper tag and the vehicle identification number had been removed.
