High Schoolers Back To Practice In DFW Heat
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Many high school students across North Texas will head back to school on Monday, but they won't be hitting the books just yet. In some districts -- including the Fort Worth Independent School District -- practices begin for both football and band members on Monday morning. And it comes as the Metroplex enters its 10th consecutive day in the triple digits.
Football players will hit the field to prepare for the new season. But trainers and coaches have strict rules to follow regarding the extreme heat. For the first four days of practice, players will have a chance to get acclimated to the scorching temperatures by practicing in shirts, shorts and helmets instead of full pads and gear.
Two-a-day practices are also limited. Teams are not allowed to hold two-a-day practices on consecutive days, and the athletes cannot be outside for more than five hours.
The Fort Worth ISD said that trainers and coaches will monitor all players and band students for heat-related illnesses and injuries, and require that all students take frequent breaks -- every 20 to 30 minutes -- and stay hydrated..
Most school districts have altered their practice schedules so that students are only on the field earlier in the day, getting back inside before noon in order to avoid the hottest hours.
