High Hopes As School Year Begins In FWISD
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - After several weeks of planning, school districts across North Texas are welcoming back students on Monday morning, and the Fort Worth Independent School District's new superintendent has high hopes. Among the initiatives that Superintendent Walter Dansby is eager to see succeed is the district's first ever all-boys academy.
Dansby started the school year at Dunbar Young Men's Leadership Academy. Starting in sixth grade, the boys will develop leadership skills through a style of curriculum centered on college prep.
But there are changes all across the district. Therapy dogs will be at Luella Merrett Elementary School to help first-time students transition into the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classroom environment. And it is not just the kids who sometimes need help with that transition. At J.T. Stevens Elementary School, the PTA is hosting a 'Tears and Cheers' reception for parents who have anxieties about leaving their kids at school.
That parental involvement is a good thing, however. Dansby is urging parents at all campuses to get involved with their child's education this year through a computer network system called Parent Portal. "Our goals and hopes for this year are to make sure that we really get our parents engaged. I want to really encourage our parents to get involved in what goes on at school," Dansby said.
