Heroic Teenage Girl Saves Group From House Fire
KAUFMAN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) -- A weekend party in rural Kaufman County would likely have ended in tragedy if not for the heroic actions of an 18-year-old girl.
A group of teenagers spent the night at a cabin owned by one of the parents just outside the town of Scurry, Texas.
Before turning in for the night, one of the teenagers dropped a lit cigarette on a couch inside the house. The teenagers dragged the couch out onto the front porch, thinking they had found and extinguished the cigarette.
But Jessica Gallegos says the fire restarted and woke her up.
"I started to feel the heat on my feet and on my face, and I was like, 'what is going on,'" said Gallegos. "Then I could see the flickering and hear the popping."
Gallegos rushed to wake all six of her friends up, and they headed out the only door that wasn't blocked by flames. Cheyenne Benton was the last one out of the house.
"The porch is where we ran off and that's where the first started," said Benton.
One fire investigator told a parent that, had the teenagers remained in the house an additional two minutes, they would have all been trapped.
