Heavy Rain & High Winds As Storms Move Across North Texas
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Thunderstorms are dumping what CBS 11 Storm Team Meteorologists say could eventually be inches of rain across North Texas.
Heavy rain, lightning and wind gusts of up to 50 mph are flooding streets and blowing debris about.
Weather that could include lightning, hail, and rain heavy enough to cause flash flooding is expected to continue for several hours.
Just before 6 p.m. Oncor was reporting more than 35,000 North Texas customers were without power.
A house fire in south Arlington is believed to have been sparked by lightning.
Officials in Wise County have confirmed to CBS 11 News that a fire and explosion at a gas well, between Rhome and Decatur, was caused by lightning. Crews are letting another gas well fire northwest of Godley burn itself out. No word if weather sparked that blaze.
A ground stop of departing flights was in effect for about an hour at both Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Love Field Airport in Dallas.
Storms contributed to the cancellation of more than 100 DFW departures and also caused dozens of inbound DFW flights to be diverted to other airports.
Possible flash flooding situations has also caused Texas Department Of Transportation to reschedule the closure of US 75 tonight. TxDOT had planned construction work that would have closed the southbound lands of 75 at Eldorado Parkway. The closure has tentatively been rescheduled for May 13.
In Frisco, US 380 between Dallas Parkway and Preston Road was closed because of a downed traffic signal. Delays in the area were expected for up to six hours.
Wet roads and reduced visibility are causing traffic delays across the metroplex. Accidents and traffic signal issues are causing backups across North Texas. Click here to check are road conditions before you head out.
The severe weather could come with good news. The North Texas rainfall is heavy enough that all of the water isn't being absorbed into the ground and is causing runoff into area lakes.
