Heavy Rain, Flooding In Central & South Texas
TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Rain came down fast and furious in parts of the state last night. Some areas were drenched with more than a foot of water. With the storm system dumping that much rain, there were a lot of flooding problems.
Heavy rain and rising water meant some people were evacuated from their homes. A number of people out on the roadways got carried away in fast moving water, and later had to be rescued.
One person is dead in Caldwell County.
Even now, the water is keeping more than 1,000 people in Austin and the surrounding areas out of their homes.
Fourteen inches of rain fell in the town of Wimberley, just southwest of Austin.
In Pflugerville, firefighters had to help stranded drivers get to higher ground.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has activated its search and rescue and swift water rescue teams. Rescuers in helicopters and boats are still helping people stranded by the flooding.
People at an RV park in New Braunfels only had minutes to get out of the way of the water. "They told us the flood was coming," camper Bob Long recalled. "They told us we needed to go so we all moved up the street."
Further south in Beaumont, some five inches of rain caused street flooding. Several drivers had to be rescued, but none were injured.
In most places, the water receded as fast as it rose – but it will take a lot longer to clean up all of the damage.
