Morning Storms Flood Roads, Leave Thousands In The Dark
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - North Texans got rattled out of bed early Sunday morning as a line of intense storms moved through, flooding streets and creeks and knocking out power to tens of thousands of people.
Hundreds of lightning strikes were recorded, including one captured on video at a construction crane in Uptown Dallas. That caused a loud boom that could be heard throughout the area.
In Arlington a home was struck by lightning, causing a small fire.
"It has been just like fireworks," said homeowner Kenneth Rose. "A real loud sound when it hit . . . sparks everywhere.
Rose said firefighters found smoke and charred wood where the fire burned through his roof.
"So, we were all standing out in the rain, just looking at it," he said. "They patched it up with plastic."
In Lewisville police blocked off a flooded road and blocked lanes on Interstate 35 East to keep cars from wading through deep water.
There was also flooding in Irving. Pools of water collected on the roadside while city crews tried to dislodge debris from storm drains.
The wet roads may have contributed to several accidents, including one in Plano.
A car crashed through the fence of an apartment complex on Custer Road.
More than 18,000 homes lost power Sunday but by late evening the vast majority had service restored.
