HALTOM CITY (CBSDFW.COM) - A carjacking involving an off-duty police officer on Tuesday morning resulted in a chase and crash. The incident began at around 5:15 a.m. when the officer called authorities to the 5700 block of River Ridge Court for assistance.
The officer is with the Haltom City Police Department. He informed authorities that his Ford Mustang had been stolen. He had turned on the car to warm it up before leaving for work, but two suspects opened the door without knowing that he was inside.
One suspect started to flee on foot. The other suspect was able to take the car and drive away. The officer helped police locate the vehicle, but the suspects did not stop for authorities, instead leading officers on a chase through the area.
That chase ended with a crash at a beer and wine store near the intersection of Sylvania Avenue and Kimbo Road.
Both suspects were inside of the vehicle when it crashed. One of them was injured and transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to be okay. The second suspect fled from the scene on foot and has not yet been found. Authorities have not yet released any additional information about this individual.
The arrested suspect has been charged with attempted theft and evading arrest.
No police officers were hurt during this incident, including the man involved in the initial carjacking. His name has not been released.
Authorities want to remind North Texans about the dangers of leaving vehicles unattended while they are warming up on cold mornings. This is an increasingly common cause of car theft in the winter months.
