Halloween The Deadliest Night Of The Year For Pedestrians
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - In just a few days streets across North Texas will be filled with little ghosts and goblins on the prowl for sweet treats. But according to AAA, All Hallows Eve is also the deadliest night of year for pedestrians.
This year AAA Texas is urging parents to take extra safety steps before heading out with trick-or-treaters. They say the goal is to "Be Seen This Halloween."
"We want this night to be full of fond memories -- not tragedies," AAA spokesperson Doug Shupe said.
Though motorists need to pay particular attention on Halloween, day and night, pedestrians are most vulnerable between the hours of 4 p.m. and Midnight.
AAA is suggesting that parents –
- Select highly visible costumes
- Make sure costumes fit well
- Go over safety precautions with children
- Plan trick-or-treating route and supervision in advance
- Take a flashlight with fresh batteries
Drivers out on Halloween are being asked to –
- Avoid neighborhood shortcuts
- Watch for children in the street
- Drive sober
- Slow down
According to AAA, a pedestrian is more than twice as likely to be killed if they're hit by a car traveling at 35 mph compared to one moving at 25 mph.
