H.S. Softball Team Pitches In At Tornado Damaged Church
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Kids nowadays. Often that statement is said with frustration or contempt, but it certainly can't be used that way when speaking of the Lady Wildcats softball team at Dunbar High School.
According to the National Weather Service, at least 14 tornadoes touched down in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex alone. Some of the hardest hit areas include those in Lancaster, Forney and Arlington.
One of the most viewed photos from Tuesday's storm was of St. Barnabas United Methodist Church in Arlington. The picture (seen below) shows a full-grown tree, uprooted, twisted upside-down, and slammed into the church.
One of the areas most damaged at St. Barnabas was the kitchen -- that meant all of the Easter eggs and treats meant for this weekend were lost.
So you're wondering how do student-athletes at a Fort Worth school associate with an Arlington church? Head Dunbar Girls Softball Coach Christine Kuehn is a member of St. Barnabas.
"One of my main goals is also to teach life lessons, to show the girls how to get involved and to teach them how to give back to the community," Kuehn stated on the Fort Worth ISD website.
Thursday afternoon members of the Lady Wildcats softball team spent their lunchtime filling plastic eggs with treats. In all, more than 1,000 eggs were filled with candy. Coach Kuehn said the eggs would delivered before Sunday.
Also on Thursday, St. Barnabas leaders announced that Tuesday's tornado damage would not deter them from celebrating Holy Week. The church will hold an Easter Sunday sunrise service on the church lawn, at 5011 West Pleasant Ridge Road in Arlington.
