Gun-Toting Teen Shot In Garland Neighborhood
GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - Officers from a North Texas police department say they were forced to shoot a teenager in a Garland neighborhood late Monday morning.
The incident happened along Highway 78 near the Garland/Sachse line. Garland police are investigating, after Sachse officers say they were forced to shoot a teen with a gun.
Witness Christopher Dout told CBS 11 News, "I just heard what sounded like fire crackers." Another witness said he could see the teen had a gun.
Just before 11 a.m. both the Garland and Sachse police department received emergency calls. "That there was a young man, a teenager, that had a gun and was in the neighborhood walking around," explained Garland police Public Information Officer Joe Harn.
Police say they spotted the armed teen around 11:15 a.m. "The officers told him [the teenager] to drop his gun. He didn't," said Dout. It was then Harn said, "He [the teenager] pointed a gun at them, and that's when they fired. He [the teenager] was transported to Baylor Hospital of Garland."
The gunman, a Garland ISD student, was later transported by air ambulance to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.
Since the shooting happened with their city limits, garland police are investigating. As it stands, officials say, according to officer and witness statements, the shooting was warranted.
The unidentified teen remains hospitalized. No word on his condition.
