Guest Helps Mother & Baby Escape Burning Dallas Townhouse

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) — Investigators say a two-story townhouse complex caught fire Saturday after a mother cooking in the kitchen left the food unattended to change her baby's diaper upstairs, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue. Both were able to escape after a guest noticed the flames.
Investigators said the fire was an accident.
Firefighters responded to the Davenport Apartments in North Dallas around 4 p.m. to find smoke coming from the first floor of a unit in the townhouse complex, Jason Evans with Dallas Fire-Rescue said. The fire quickly escalated, with flames reaching the attic, but firefighters were able to contain the fire to the original unit, despite extensive damage, Evans said.
Investigators said a guest, who was outside barbecuing, happened to look inside and see the fire in the kitchen. The guest told the mother, and she got her baby and escaped.
No injuries were reported, but two people have been displaced from the unit and at least one other unit had smoke damage.
