Group Wants Bicyclists To Take Over Central Expressway
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – For one day this spring, a bicyclist group wants to keep all cars off a stretch of Central Expressway so that bikes can take over.
BikeDallas.net is promoting a critical mass bike tour, where thousands of cyclists would take over the northbound lanes of Central Expressway, from downtown Dallas to McKinney on Sunday, April 21.
But a TX-DOT spokesman says no one has given bike tour organizers any clearance to clear Highway 75 for a 30-mile bike only tour. The cities of Dallas, Richardson, Plano, Allen and McKinney would have to sign on to such an event. So far, none have.
TxDot officials say they've shut down highways before for events, like TV and motion picture scene shoots. However, putting the brakes on drivers for a 30- mile stretch of Central Expressway has never been done.
CBS 11 talked with bike tour promoter Gary LaCarra by phone. He says he is certain he'll acquire all permits within 30-45 days.
Cyclists Paul Haney says the plan doesn't make much sense, but says he would try it if it happens.
"That sounds exciting. I would totally do that. Yeah. Ha ha. I'd get to ride on a highway."
