ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Police appear to be closing in on a suspect in the murder of an Arlington high school student. A tip Tuesday night led officers to the SUV believed to have been seen leaving Monday's shooting.

Officials have tentatively identified the driver and are hunting for that person now.

Late Tuesday afternoon hundreds gathered and held a candlelight vigil to remember 18-year-old Carl Wilson.

At Martin High School, the Warriors remembered Wilson, a high school senior, as a talented football player and friend.

Martin High student and football captain Tripp White said, "The beautiful thing about football no matter what race, what age, what background, football brings you together as one. Carl came in, we took Carl in and he took us in. We were family."

Loved ones consoled Wilson's mother and lamented the future Wilson won't get to live.

Wilson was also father to a young son, King. The one-year-old sat sucking on a lollipop, too young to know his father is gone.

Wilson's friends and family say he was a single dad looking to give his son a better life.

Speaking of Little King one person said, "He loved his Daddy. That's all he knows is his Daddy."

Police have now recovered a black Lincoln SUV. The vehicle was seen leaving Treepointe Drive, the Kennedale street where Wilson was gunned down. Now investigators are looking for the driver, a person who they believe has ties to an Arlington gang.

The life of the person of interest is the exact opposite of Wilson. "Our victim we don't believe had gang ties," explained Kennedale police Chief Tommy Williams. "We don't believe he's involved in any of that."

Police the incident could have all started with a minor argument at school, between students -- but then outsiders got involved.

Chief Williams said, "It's appearing more and more that a lot of the people involved are not students. It started between students, but it quickly escalated outside school."

Even as candles were lit and prayers said Tuesday, Arlington police patrol cars kept a close watch on events in the area.

Several North Texas police departments are working together to find the people responsible for Wilson's murder.
