Grass Fire Spreads To Mobile Home, Killing One

KAUFMAN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - The extreme fire danger has turned deadly.  A Kaufman County man was killed and two others
were injured after a grass fire consumed a mobile home.  It happened on Travis Lane, northeast of Kaufman.

Fire destroyed everything in the lot. It was easy to distinguish the bed frames that remained.  But gone was the doublewide mobile home structure that once stood around them.

Kaufman Emergency Management says this fire started as a brush fire around 5:15 Tuesday evening. They can't say how it started yet because they're still investigating the fire.

A nearby volunteer firefighter on his way home spotted the smoke. But by the time he arrived, the mobile home was already engulfed in flames. Friends say an elderly couple in poor health lived in the mobile home.  The woman had an oxygen tank. An adult son who was also staying in the mobile home, was only able to pull his mother out.

Linda Meadors was a family friend who arrived at the burned lot to retrieve the dogs and horses. "Oh it's horrible. It's horrible. I can't believe it's just gone. I don't know how I'm going to help them but somebody's going to have to do something," she said.

The mother and son, who were injured in the fire, were taken to Rennaissance Hospital in Terrell. Friends say another daughter had bought the mobile home to give her parents a place to live where they could have a garden.
