Grand Jury Indicts Two Arlington Jailers In Inmate's Death

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) -  A Tarrant County Grand Jury indicted a pair of Arlington Police jailers Monday in the March 2015 the death of inmate Jonathan Paul.

Arlington Police say they launched a criminal and administrative investigation into this incident.

In a news release Monday, Arlington Police said, "In response to our criminal investigation, the Grand Jury has determined criminal charges should be filed, and we anticipate that the outcome of the administrative investigation will be concluded within the next two weeks. The Administrative Investigation is taking a substantial amount of time to complete based upon the complexity of the case and our desire to ensure all relevant evidence, including the Grand Jury decision, is obtained as part of the administrative investigation."

The department has placed Pedro Medina, 33, on administrative leave with pay based upon the return of a true-bill on the charge of Criminally Negligent Homicide.

Medina has been employed since 2012 and assigned to jail operations.

Former employee Stephen Schmidt, 57,  was also true-billed on the charge of Criminally Negligent Homicide.

He retired from the Arlington Police Department on October 22, 2015 and was assigned to jail operations since 2005.

"This has been a difficult case for our community," said Police Chief Will Johnson. "We promised a thorough and vigorous investigation into this matter. Now that the Grand Jury proceeding has concluded, we are eager to finalize the administrative case and present the findings of the investigation to the family and our community."
