Grand Jury Indicts Suspect In Deadly SXSW Crash
AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — A grand jury has indicted the suspect in the deadly South By Southwest crash in Austin on capital murder and murder charges.
The Travis County grand jury indicted Rashad Owens on one capital murder count and four counts of murder on Monday, along with 24 aggravated assault counts. The 21-year-old Killeen man remains in Travis County Jail with bonds totaling $5.5 million. A court hearing is scheduled for June 3.
Authorities have said Owens accelerated through the crowd March 13, killing two people and leaving more than 20 injured. Two others later died of their injuries. Police say Owens was fleeing a patrolman and driving down a closed street when the crash happened.
Online jail records list no attorney for Owens.
Deandre Tatum, a North Texas teenager injured in the crash and comatose since March 13, died on March 27. Tatum, the fourth victim in the SXSW crash, was a 2013 Trimble Tech High School graduate.
