GPISD To Put Armed Police Officer At Every School
GRAND PRAIRIE (CBSDFW.COM) - When Grand Prairie Independent School District students return to school on January 2, they'll be greeted by a uniformed police officer. Everyday, officers will make a stop at each of GPISD's 47 schools, in an effort to make school safer.
"We want parents and children to feel safe when they go to school and we know that by seeing the officers there, there is a bit more sense of security," says Detective Lyle Gensler.
Along with a stronger police presence, Grand Prairie ISD superintendent Susan Simpson-Hull says the district is making more changes to tighten security.
"On many of our campuses, we have student ambassadors who open doors and greet people," she explains. "We're pulling those kids back into the core of the building. We'll have adults greeting people."
Some parents say the police presence is welcomed for now, but it's not a long- term solution to our nation's gun problem.
As of the right now, the district says the program will last indefinitely. Police also say they'll meet with school administrators to review security plans and make recommendations.
