AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Governor Greg Abbott underwent a successful skin graft procedure Tuesday at Brooke Army Medical Center to repair damage from significant burns on both feet.
On the recommendation of doctors, Governor Abbott's office says he will extend his stay at Brooke Army Medical Center to allow for further healing and to ensure a prompt recovery.
For this reason the Associated Press reports the Governor will miss the GOP Convention in Cleveland.
Abbott spokesman Matt Hirsch said doctors said it would be "irresponsible" for Abbott to travel, including to the gathering celebrating presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Abbott suffered what his office termed a "minor infection" after sustaining second- and third-degree burns on both legs below the knee and both feet on Thursday, while vacationing with his family in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Exactly how Abbott scalded himself remains unclear and his office has declined to answer further questions.
