Perry Speaking At Plano Chamber Luncheon
PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - Gov. Rick Perry is speaking to the Plano Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday morning while dismissing calls for him to reimburse the state for his security detail during his run for the White House.
So far, Perry's presidential price tag is nearly $3 million –– that includes hotels, airfare, fuel and other expenses incurred by the agents assigned to Perry and his family.
Perry told KRLD on Tuesday that past governors have had the same detail and that the Department of Public Safety pays for it. "Every governor, whether it was Ann Richards or George Bush… have had the detail," Perry said. "I wish we didn't live in a world where there are bad people who would do bad things to us, but there are."
Perry accused his critics of focusing on matters of questionable substance, saying there are other ways to save money that the time could be spent on instead.
In a $80.6 billion budget, Perry said his $3 million security detail barely makes a dent. "We're talking big sums of money here, from the standpoint of budgeting and making right decisions for the people of Texas," Perry said. "There's always going to be people who aren't really interested in talking about the substantive issues and get deflected off on what I consider minor issues."
Perry speaks Wednesday at the Plano Chamber of Commerce First Quarterly Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Registration for the event is closed.
