Good Samaritans Save Woman From South Dallas Fire
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -- A group of good Samaritans rescued a woman from a South Dallas fire on Thursday morning, but a man inside the residence died in the blaze.
The fire began around 9:40 a.m. in the 6400 block of Elam Road at the intersection of Jonelle Avenue.
A person driving by called 911, then rushed inside the home -- along with a postal worker and several other people. A woman in the residence indicated that a man was trapped in the rear of the home.
"They weren't unable to get to him, so they came back to the front, helped the lady out of the house," said Jason Evans with Dallas Fire-Rescue.
A man from the recreation center across the street then brought a fire extinguisher to help extinguish the flames.
Neighbor Minerva Alonso says the residence that burned did not have plumbing, water, gas or electricity. In fact, her family would often take food to the residence to help them out.
"Everything happens for a reason," said Alonso. "Maybe he's better off in heaven than here being treated like that -- not having anything to eat, being cold, not having any food...not having any family."
The woman inside the residence was taken to a hospital. There is no word on her condition.
Fire investigators have not determined a cause and are still in the process of gathering the details of the incident
