Good Samaritan Breaks Up Fight, Is Stabbed To Death
DALLAS (CBSFDW.COM) - Police have arrested one man and are searching for two more in the investigation into the stabbing death of Terrell Evan Cowherd, 26, in Dallas.
Police say they have charged Jerry Brown, 23, with murder. Cowherd was trying to break up a fight between Brown and another unidentified man near the intersection of Greenville Avenue and Sears Street just before 2 a.m. Saturday morning when the attack happened.
Police say video taken by a passerby's smart phone shows Cowherd merely trying to break up a fight involving the other shirtless man seen in the video.
"He's de-escalating the fight," said Dallas Police Crimes Against Persons Major Jeff Cotner, speaking of Cowherd. "He's a Good Samaritan, he's trying to get everybody to rationalize and go about their business." But according to Cotner, another man grabbed Cowherd from behind.

Brown started hitting Cowherd, then restrained him, according to a police report, while the other man stabbed him. Witnesses told police Brown continued to punch Cowherd in the face as the other man stabbed him repeatedly.
Cowherd was transported to the Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas where he was pronounced deceased. Investigators describe him as relatively new to Dallas; an engineer and scholar with family in Houston.
The man who fatally stabbed Cowherd is still at large, though police described him as a man in his 20s with a muscular build and tattoos of wings on each of his shoulder blades. He is five feet nine inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds, police said. No name was available.
Police say they are also looking for a third "person of interest" in the case, though it's unclear exactly what role they believe he played in the assault. He is described as five feet eight inches tall, between 160 and 180 pounds with gold teeth.
Police and businesses along Lower Greenville have scrubbed the area's image in recent years, attracting family-oriented businesses not just clubs and restaurants. But this recent violent incident doesn't bother patrons who spoke to CBS 11.
"I don't' feel concerned, I don't feel threatened or unsafe," restaurant patron Stephanie Shaw said. "You go out, things happen, people get into fights. It was unfortunate," agreed Casey Henson. "It's not a bad place to be, not a bad place to spend time," echoed a third patron, Hope Teel.
