Going From Long To Short, All For A Good Cause
COPPELL (CBS 11 NEWS) - Pink Hearts Funds is a ministry to help people affected by cancer or hair loss disorders. One of their main missions is to provide free wigs to patients who can't afford them.
In order to make wig donations, there first have to be those willing to donate hair. The students, parents and faculty at Lakeside Elementary School in Coppell "ponied" up Friday morning to do just that.
CBS 11 arrived just in time to watch about 30 people volunteer to cut off a big lock of hair for Pink Hearts. And they took the big snip in front a cheering student body, all packed in the school gymnasium.
The donation wasn't a first for the school. First-grade teacher Jennifer Kubinsky started the Lakeside Ponytail Club four years ago. Happily, she said each year the "haul" gets bigger and bigger. "We had a huge turnout in the first year we did it, about 15 to 20 girls. This year we had about 30 [girls donating], so its just been a growing success every year we put it on."
The line formed at Lakeside to make a donation girls weren't the only ones in it. For the first time a few men surrendered hair as well this year.
Ed Bollen is an ex-Marine who is more accustomed to crew cuts then ponytails. His daughter Emily asked him if he'd to grow his hair out for the event. Friday was his first haircut since last September. "I lost my dad to cancer so its a great cause," Bollen said, before giving a big hug to his daughter. He didn't have to find her in the crowd, she was the one who cut his ponytail.
It's a gift that can just keep giving. Almost all the people, with suddenly much shorter hair, said they plan to grow their locks out so they can donate again next year.
