Globe Life Ballpark Offers Bacon-On-A Stick
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - While the Texas Rangers front office spent the off-season making moves on the field, workers spent the time making additions to Globe Life Park and chefs at the ballpark busied themselves in the kitchen trying to top last year's menus with tasty new additions.
"Its so hard to come up with a new concept every year," said Globe Life Park Executive Chef Cris Vazquez. "You think you've done everything and you start looking and saying 'Golly, I wish I could come up with something!'...and this year it's been fun. We've come up with a lot of new concepts."
Starting with the new sandwich in honor of new outfielder Shin-Soo Choo. It's 24-inches long, earning it the name 'The Choomongous'.
"Its kind of a Tex-Mex/Asian dish," Vazquez explained. "And it's a Korean BBQ sandwich with Asian cole slaw and Sriracha mayonnaise. It's wonderful! Real tasty!"
Wash it down with a frozen beer. The top is like a beer ICEE that melts in your mouth keeping the beer cold on those hot August nights. There's brisket sausage, a newly revised menu for the Captain Morgan Club and, to top it all off -- bacon.
Thick Hungarian bacon on a stick smoked and finished with a coating of maple syrup. "It's really, really good!" Vazquez exclaimed. "It's just so tasty, its like a party in your mouth! You've got the saltiness, the sweetness, the spiciness. It's really good!"
During the season, you will see magnetometers randomly set up as security at some entrances. They're ramping up for league-wide full security at ballparks in 2015, but its not like the airport.
The only things that set off detectors are large metal objects such as guns.
"For us, we don't want you to take your shoes off," said Blake Miller, whose in charge Of Globe Life Park security. "We don't want you to take your belt off. As we were joking we want people to keep their clothes on."
A place most people never see, the visitors club house, also received a makeover. It received new lockers as part of its first makeover in 20 years. And the gift store in center field looks entirely different, too.
"It's great," said shopper Shawna Morley. "It's very large. There's a new Oakley station over there it looks like. I think it's great."
Oakley set up shop there and can make you a custom pair of sunglasses.
And the Rangers have also partnered with Under Armor for some unique Rangers apparel.
"It's really exclusive," said Shawn Mattox with Metroplex Sports Centers about the Under Armor gear. "Fans are only going to find it at Globe Life. You're not going to find it at academy or sports authority."
