DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A police officer is recovering in the hospital Thursday morning after being struck by an SUV at around 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday night while in the line of duty.

The officer is a veteran with the Glenn Heights Police Department, near DeSoto. He was standing along a stretch of the road, responding to a minor traffic collision. That is when a passing SUV clipped him, knocking the officer into a ditch.

The hurt officer was taken to Methodist Central Hospital in Dallas. He suffered cuts and a serious head injury, but was conscious when flown in for medical treatment.

The victim has since been identified by the Glenn Heights Officers Association as Officer T. Chaney, a member of the Glenn Heights Police Department for 17 years. He is expected to be okay. He has been surrounded by family members and the department's chief.

The female driver of the SUV was not injured. She has also not been identified. That driver stopped immediately and is not likely to face any charges.
