Girl Scouts Introduce Badges For Finance & Business
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Little girls across the nation -- some as young as 6 years old -- are already learning lessons in financial responsibility. The Girl Scouts have introduced a series of new badges that focus on making money, saving money and using money to help out others. It's a far leap from where the organization started 100 years ago, teaching about sewing and cooking.
"Many girls need to learn how to budget," said Melissa Negron with the Girl Scouts of Texas-Oklahoma Plains. "So, when they go out on their own, off to college and after college, this is just great prepatory skills for them."
At Seminary Hills Park Elementary School in Fort Worth, Girl Scouts are learning how to becoming working women. Mikaella Phillips said that she loves it. "I think it's going to be easier," the 10-year-old said. "Since I'm getting it at this age, it will be easier for me when I grow up."
There are 26 total badges that the girls can earn for finance and business -- like 'Good Credit' and 'Budgeting' -- all to prepare these young girls for an ever-changing world. Phillips has her eye on one badge in particular. "The 'Business Owner' badge," she said.
"A lot of women nowadays aren't in the home anymore," explained Negron. "They're out making money. So, it's all the more important to teach girls how to manage that money."
It is all designed to empower young girls, like Ashlea Torres, who will soon grow into young ladies with dreams of their own. "I like them," Torres said of the badges. "I think, when I grow up, I want to be a business person to sell products for your hair."
