Girl On Way To School Injured By Hit & Run Driver
JOHNSON COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - A hit-and-run driver struck and injured a North Texas girl who was waiting for the school bus Friday morning.
The incident happened in a semi-rural neighborhood in Johnson County. "We got a 911 call off of Karen's Corner in the Alvarado area of our county, in a rural part of the county, regarding a 13-year-old girl who had been struck by a vehicle," explained Lieutenant Tim Jones, with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.
The girl's mother was the one who called authorities, reporting someone in a truck had hit her daughter and drove off.
Investigators say the girl didn't get very far from home before being struck. "I don't know if she was walking across to wait for the bus, or walking across the street to go down, but it happened right by her house," Jones said.
Sheriff's officials confirm the victim, who has not been identified, received serious injuries. "The girl, [who] was injured, was airlifted downtown to one of the hospitals and is being treated for a possible broken leg and internal injuries."
According to deputies, the truck that struck the girl was either green or black in color. A Hispanic man is believed to have been behind the wheel. Given the location of the crime authorities believe the truck belongs to someone who lives in or frequents the area.
