DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - The flu season is in full swing, and there have already been some confirmed flu deaths in both Dallas County and Tarrant County. That is why health officials hope that you will heed the warning and get a flu shot this year.

The weather might not feel like winter quite yet, but do not let the temperature fool you. Texas is one of five states that are now reporting high flu numbers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dallas County health officials said that the number of local flu cases doubled in just the last week alone.

In fact, the wild temperature swings could be one reason that North Texas has seen a spike in flu cases, and even earlier than usual.

About half of those cases are a strain of the flu that is not included in this year's vaccine. But officials said that the shot can still be effective against other strains, and you and your family are urged to get that protection.

To help with that effort, a Walmart store in Denton is hosting a flu clinic on Thursday and Friday. The store claims that it has given more flu shots than any other Walmart in the nation, and they hope to add to that number with this special event.

Pharmacy employees will be handing out information about the flu shot in the store's parking lot, and then taking any interested shoppers inside to get vaccinated.

Walmart had previously stated that the flu shots would be given in the parking lot, to people still sitting in their cars. It was later verified that this process would not be in line with flu shot regulations, so the clinic's concept was changed.

The Walmart store is located at 2750 West University Drive in Denton. The clinic runs from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday. The store is also asking that those who come for a flu shot make a donation to Toys for Tots, to help needy children in Denton County.
