George P. Bush Making His Political Mark
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - He's the George Bush of a new generation: George P. Bush. These days, you'll find the 36-year-old nephew of former president George W. Bush and grandson of former president George H.W. Bush out on the campaign trail.
He just wrapped up a week-long bus tour, as part of his Maverick Pac political action committee, courting the younger generation.
Bush told students at Miami Dade College last Friday, "That's what Maverick Pac is all about. It's about getting young people registered and voting."
In an interview in Miami with our sister tv station, WFOR, the 36-year-old Bush, who is the eldest son of former Florida governor Jeb Bush, says he is a strong supporter of Mitt Romney. "Mitt, if you look at his track record, essentially anything he touches has turned to gold."
Bush is trying to attract more Hispanics to the Republican Party. He's a founding board member of the Hispanic Republicans of Texas.
Bush has previously criticized those candidates who take a hard-line approach to illegal immigration, such as Romney. "The Republican party, Governor Romney, and the Hispanic community pretty much agree on 80 percent of all the issues. It's just lately that there's a focus on 20 percent that we disagree on."
Romney is considered a lock in Texas, which is solidly Republican. But President Obama recently predicted what many experts believe: Because of a growing Hispanic population that often votes Democratic, Texas will soon become a swing state.
Without pausing, Bush, said, "Not if I have anything to do with it."
So is he ready to run? "Right now, for me, my focus is to help out with party causes", Bush said.
Indications are George P. Bush is getting ready to run for office. Republican party leaders in North Texas say he has expressed an interest in running for Texas Land Commissioner, or possibly state Attorney General.
Bush says, "I'll admit I've been encouraged by supporters, by people in the Republican party, to consider running for political office. But right now, I'm not focused on that."
Bush, who was seen on an Irving golf course Monday with his famous uncle, says he and his wife and family are just happy living in Fort Worth.
