GCISD Teacher On Leave, Accused Of Improper Contact With Student

GRAPEVINE (CBS 11 NEWS) - Grapevine Police are investigating claims of possible inappropriate contact between a music teacher and a student.

Cody Dickson has been put on administrative leave while the issue is sorted out.

Grapevine Police technically have two investigations still open involving district music teachers and students; and third teacher has already plead guilty to a federal child pornography charge.

Corrine Sherry's son was in a music program at one of the schools involved.  But thankfully, she says, he wasn't approached.

"But, yeah, it did scare me, it does scare me a lot," she told CBS 11 News.  "Older people get access to them, and I really truly believe the parents really need to be a big part of it and the school needs to be aware of everyone's background, I guess."

Another parent told CBS 11 News she thinks the school district acts as responsibly as possible.

"I think here in Grapevine-Colleyville we'd done a pretty good job. I hadn't heard of very many incidents in the past where that had happened," says LaJaynes Dupuy.

Like Corrine Sherry, LaJaynes Dupuy says communication with kids is vital.  "We talk to them about improper behavior about students, teachers, and the people in general they come in contact with."

The most recent allegation is that music teacher Cody Dickson, assistant choir director at Colleyville Heritage High School, cannot come back to campus pending the outcome of a police investigation of possible inappropriate relationship with a student.

Meantime, Grapevine Police have also had a case open for 10-months involving a band director at Colleyville Middle School.

John McDaniel was arrested for solicitation and having an improper relationship with a minor, although there is reportedly no evidence of physical contact with a teen.

But the case has not gone to a grand jury while police go over computer drives and cellphones.

A third incident involves former Cross Timbers Middle School choir director Daniel Oberlander.

He was arrested by the FBI last December for one count of distributing child pornography.   He plead guilty in January and will be sentenced in June.  He remains in federal custody.

The school district is not going on camera to talk about any of the incidents, but says it has already started to look into additional training that might be needed in the wake of the allegations.
