Gay Marriage Debated At State GOP Convention
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - One of the biggest political conventions in the country takes over downtown Fort Worth again on Friday. Republican representatives are in the second day of the state's GOP convention, and two high-profile speakers are set to address the crowd: U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott.
Several hot-button issues are being discussed at the convention, such as gay marriage and immigration. The speakers are expected to talk about both subjects.
Supporters of same-sex marriage are protesting, but are optimistic about a recent development. A platform subcommittee stripped the language that condemned homosexuality. It had previously said that "homosexuality tears at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the family unit."
That has been replaced with "homosexuality is a chosen behavior that is contrary to the fundamental unchanging truth that have been ordained by God."
That new platform advancing at the convention in Fort Worth endorses psychological treatement that attempts to turn gay people straight. Two states have already banned the so-called "reparative therapy" on minors. Cruz spoke on Thursday night to the group 'Conservative Republicans of Texas,' in support of the Defense of Marriage Act. "Marriage is under assault right now," he said.
"We are disappointed that there are elements within the party that want to drive away conservative gays from the party," explained Republican Liberty Caucus chairman Jeff Larson.
U.S. Sen. Rand Paul and U.S. Sen. John Cornyn are also expected to speak at the convention on Friday. Republicans will vote on the state's GOP platform on Saturday.
