Gay Keller Student Says 'Promposal' Unfairly Denied

By Kristin Weisell | @KristinWeisKRLD

KELLER (KRLD) -- Prom season and the big "promposal" invites are starting again. But one Keller student says she was denied her moment because she was planning to ask another girl.

Casey Akers, a gay sophomore at Timber Creek High School, had planned a big "promposal" for her female friend.

"I asked the two assistant principals if I could do a promposal, and they said 'Yes, that's fine. No problem at all,'" said Akers.

Akers says she cleared all the details with school staff, including when, where and how the event would take place -- but not who she was asking.

"Once they found out I was asking another girl, then it flipped and now suddenly I can't do it."

When Akers questioned why the event was suddenly canceled, she was told it "wasn't appropriate."

District officials said the cancellation of the prom invitation had nothing to do with Akers' sexual orientation. Instead, "promposals" just aren't allowed on school property.

Akers says she's seen other instances on campus and at other schools within the district.

A friend posted a tweet supporting Akers using "#LetCaseyPromposal". The support has gone viral, and Akers says support is pouring in from people she's never met.

Despite the ban on "promposals," Akers says she still intends on attending prom with her female friend. She's also hoping the attention will help raise awareness.

"Make sure that no matter who you are, treat everyone equally. That's the main point of this."
