Drivers Reap Benefits Of "Gas Station War"
LAKE DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The average gasoline price in both Dallas and Fort Worth is $3.41 a gallon right now, according to AAA Texas. But an intersection in Denton County at I-35E and Swisher Road has four gasoline stations selling gas for $3.29. People in the area consider their prices consistently the lowest in North Texas.
Jane Friday of Aubrey is a fan, too. "I check pretty much every place. Wal-Mart. And I have found that this is the lowest price."
Gaby Luna swears by the prices there. She drives from Garland to pick up her catering truck in Grand Prairie, then travels to Denton County to sell items from her food truck. Up and back; every day. She could gas up anywhere in two counties. But Luna stops at the QuikTrip on the freeway for the cheaper gas.
QuikTrip said high volume and operating efficiencies allow it to sell at rock-bottom prices where it wants.
"It's always at least $.10 to $.15 cheaper than everyone else in the area," he said Richard Wild of Providence Village, "so it's definitely very nice."
And it's not just local drivers aware of the secret. "Seems to be cheaper than the rest of the area so passing through I figured I'd fill up here," said Brendon Kelso of Denton.
But the intersection is what some residents are referring to as an ongoing, four-station gas war? AAA of Texas said cheaper gasoline could be used as a loss leader to bring people in for groceries or other items.
7-Eleven said there are many factors, including market conditions and its cost to buy gasoline.
No one revealed a specific strategy, but competition at the four stations had prices a dime less on Wednesday, much to the chagrin of some motorists who waited until Thursday.
"Yes, I know," said Jane Rue. "I kind of flew by here yesterday and I was going to stop and I had some other errands to do, and I didn't get here."
But Wild remained ever vigilant. "Yeah, I came here the other day and it was like $3.13 -- it was crazy. I came back with my other car and I filled it up. Loving the savings."
