Garrett Recounts First Game As 'Walk Around' Head Coach

ARLINGTON (105.3 THE FAN) --  It was a first for Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett. Since taking over the team during the 2010 season, Garrett has called plays while serving as the team's top decision maker.

But during Sunday night's 36-31 win over the New York Giants, it was offensive coordinator Bill Callahan sending the plays into Romo and the Cowboys offense.

"It was a little different, but it's certainly been the way we've been operating through the preseason. You get used to it," said Garrett during his weekly segment with New School on 105.3 The Fan.

Garrett says the arrangement allowed him to more openly communicate with the offensive, defensive and special team coaches during the game. It also allowed the staff to make the necessary in-game adjustments.

"I'm a big part of that -- I've always been a part of that," said Garrett. "But when you're not calling the plays, you have a chance to probably do that a little bit better. I thought as a staff we did a good job of that."

Miles Austin was a bright spot for the Cowboys offense, collecting 10 catches for 72 yards -- primarily from the slot. While Austin struggled in 2012, Garrett believes the hamstring issues he experience last season prevented him from playing to his potential.

Garrett says Austin has been much more explosive thus far this season, regaining the quickness that makes him a difficult cover.

"He's a hard mismatch player for teams because he's big, but he's also quick and explosive," said Garrett. "I thought he did a really good job. He helped us move the football early on in the ballgame and made a lot of big plays for us."
