Garland To Hold Emergency West Nile Meeting
GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - Garland Mayor Ronald E. Jones has called an emergency meeting of the City Council to consider a disaster declaration related to the recent West Nile outbreak.
"Health officials have indicated that 25 percent of all human cases of West Nile Virus in the country this summer are concentrated in the North Texas region," said Mayor Jones in a press release, "It is important for all of Dallas County to work together to combat this mosquito-borne disease; therefore, the Garland City Council will take official action.
The Garland Health Department has confirmed eighteen West Nile cases so far this year. Dallas County has a total of 190 cases of the virus.
Garland recently purchased new spraying equipment and received funding from the state for more pesticide.
Aerial spraying in Dallas County may begin this Thursday. The City of Garland has until Wednesday to decide if it will participate.
The Garland City Council will meet Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Garland City Hall.
