Garland Solider Killed In Afghanistan

GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - With the death of Osama Bin Laden, it's easy to forget that the fighting continues in Afghanistan.

North Texas was reminded this week of the casualties of war with the death of army private Andrew Krippner of Garland.  The 20-year-old lost his life Monday to an improvised explosive device or I.E.D in northern Afghanistan.

Private Krippner grew up in northwest Garland and attended June Shelton High School.  On Wednesday neighbors and friends brought flowers, yellow ribbons and teddy bears to the Krippner's house.

His best friend, who lives down the street, put up his own memorial in his yard to honor a soldier who was like a brother to him.

"I started calling him my brother after he left for basic training, said 19-year-old Nolan Killingsworth. "When he was stationed in Hawaii, I would end all my e-mails with, I love you brother."

Wednesday afternoon CBS 11 spoke to private Krippner's mother.  She said that she was very proud of her son.
