Garland Flood Victim Leaves Behind Wife & 4-Year-Old Son

GARLAND (CBS11) — Trapped in his car by rushing flood waters on Friday morning, Garland Police said a 29-year-old Wylie man lost his life after his vehicle became submerged while trying to cross a road covered by high water.
Investigators said Ben Floyd was a week away from his 30th birthday and leaves behind his 4-year-old son, Preston, and wife, Diana.
"I can't imagine the things that were going through his head at the time," said Sean Nunnelley, the victim's uncle.
Campbell Road near Brand Road remained closed off to traffic on Friday night as rain continued to fall throughout North Texas.
Nunnelley said Floyd and his son had just spent Thanksgiving putting up Christmas decorations together.
"You always think, is there something that could have, one little thing could have changed it you know and he might have been able to get out and be OK," Nunnelley said.
Garland firefighters said it appeared Floyd had tried to drive through high water on his way to work at Target Friday morning. At some point, they believe the current of the rushing flood waters took control of the vehicle and pulled his car off the road.
"It's not worth taking the risk of putting yourself in such a dangerous situation," said Lt. Pedro Barineau with the Garland Police Department.
While police and fire rescue urge people every year to "turn around and don't drown," the statement brings new meaning to Nunnelley.
"That's not a lesson a 4-year-old should have to learn, and it's tragic it happened," Nunnelley said.
The road will remain blocked off as long as the rain continues to fall.
