Garland Father Arrested For Infant's Death

GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Garland arrested a father who they believe injured his 5-week-old daughter, leading to her death.

Authorities responded to a call from the 1300 block of Elmhurst Drive just after 5:00 a.m. Friday morning. Officers and emergency crews arrived at the house to find CPR being given to Spencer Claire White. The 5-week-old child was transported to Baylor Hospital of Garland and later Children's Medical Center of Dallas in critical condition.

The infant died from her injuries on Friday night.

According to investigators, the girl's father -- identified as Tommy James White Jr. -- was alone with the child while other family members left to get a new pacifier at the store. Although the two were only alone for a short amount of time, those family members returned to find the 5-week-old child unconscious and not breathing.

After talking to the father, investigators came to believe that he caused the girl's injuries while the two were alone. "He, the baby and the mother had come over and spent the night at these relatives' address here in Garland. They spent the night and then this occurred early the next morning," said Officer Joe Harn of the Garland Police Department. "They do believe that he caused the injuries to this baby. We do know that family members had left to go to the store to get a pacifier for the baby."

The suspect has been charged with capital murder and is now behind bars in Dallas with a $1 million bond.
